Our Lady of El Carmen honoured on the Costa del Sol 16.07.2010
  • Our Lady of El Carmen, the Patroness of fishermen,

The seafaring traditions of Málaga Province, ever-present along the coastline throughout the year, are having their peak on July 16. For it is the Festival of Our Lady of El Carmen, the Patroness of Fishermen, who is considered to be the Queen of the Sea by the dwellers of all Mediterranean Sea-bound villages in Málaga.

On Friday this year, then, there will be several processions on different coastal points, especially in those districts that are closely linked to fishing activities, such as Huelin and El Palo in Málaga City, La Carihuela in Torremolinos, Los Boliches in Fuengirola, and Caleta de Vélez in Torre del Mar, Vélez-Málaga.

From end to end along the coastline, celebrations will be a recurring image while mirroring local traditions. Both in Málaga City and in the Western Costa del Sol and Axarquía, the climax will come with the procession into the sea: the image of Virgin Mary is placed on a fishing smack brimming with flowers, followed by little barges. The men carrying Our Lady of El Carmen wear the traditional marengo costume, consisting of a white shirt, black trousers, a red sash, and espadrille shoes.
